St. Michael’s Nursery occupies a classroom in St. Michael’s CE Primary School, Bodenham, which is a 2-11 Academy located in a beautiful rural setting within walking distance of the local church. The school’s mission statement is: “To enable high quality learning in a safe and caring Christian environment, to prepare all pupils physically, mentally and spiritually for their future.”
The Nursery is open from Monday to Friday 9.00am–3.30pm during term-time. We offer a Breakfast Club each day from 8.00am and we will always try to accommodate your needs if you require after school care as well – please speak to the School Office.
We are committed to promoting the well-being of children and we aim to provide a safe, secure, stimulating and enabling environment, which will enhance the development and education of your child as we work in partnership with you – their parents and carers. Emphasis is placed on caring for each child as a unique individual and we work within a framework that ensures equality of opportunity for all children and families.
We strive to create a cheerful, happy, homely atmosphere with well qualified, experienced, caring, responsive and attentive staff and plenty of opportunities for each child to follow their interests. By supporting them to become immersed in first hand experiences, which both challenge and consolidate their knowledge and understanding, we positively promote how young children learn.
We firmly believe in intrinsic motivation of children and use encouragement and support to promote positive behaviour whilst teaching children how to resolve conflicts and manage sharing and turn-taking.
Through quality and purposeful play-based learning experiences, we follow the curriculum for the Early Years Foundation Stage, enabling each child’s learning and development to progress at their own rate whilst having lots of FUN! Our approach aims to promote a positive disposition to all future learning and, combined with our close links with the rest of the school; we are confident that we offer a smooth transition into full-time education for the children entrusted to our care. The children spend time with the Reception staff and children and visit their new classroom so they are familiar with them and, when the time comes to move on, they do so happily. The school has a lovely family atmosphere and the older children are truly amazing in the ways they support the younger children.
We currently use an online platform to share photos with parents and carers of their children engaged in activities and we are happy to share information verbally on a daily basis regarding children’s development and progress. Our priority is to ensure every child has access to quality interactions with Nursery staff as we believe these are vital to promote their learning, development and well-being. As communication, speech and language is such a significant aspect of any child’s development, staff are all aware of the importance of creating a language rich environment that also requires these quality interactions.
We liaise with Health Visitors, Speech and Language Therapists and other professionals as the need arises (with parental consent) and the Manager is trained to follow the correct processes to identify and support SEND.
We have a designated entrance and fenced outdoor area with resources that include a large sand pit, mud kitchen, raised garden bed, canopy, climbing equipment with slides and a wooden playhouse. Facilities we share with school include a large asphalt playground - ideal for play on bikes and scooters; a huge field with wooden structures that we utilise to help develop physical skills and the children’s imagination; a securely fenced pond; and a small area of planted trees.
Our Manager is a qualified Forest School Leader and, although we do not have natural woodland on site, we do follow the ethos of Forest School in our approach, including the view that there is no such thing as bad weather - just bad clothing, so we spend a considerable amount of our day outside, unless there are extremely windy conditions or torrential rain.
We have access to the large school hall in good and bad weather - for PE activities, parachute play etc. - and the children have recently enjoyed watching a puppet show and learning dance routines in this space.
All staff are appropriately trained in First Aid and Safeguarding and access Continuous Professional Development opportunities as they arise.
